Investigative Project on Race and Equity unveils new visual identity and expanded digital hub
The Investigative Project on Race and Equity today announced the launch of a new visual identity and redesigned website, reflecting its evolution as a growing newsroom focused on investigative reporting on race and equity and a training hub for journalists committed to impactful, accountability-driven work.
The updated design draws intentional connections to a powerful historical lineage. Its typography is inspired by the Chicago Freedom Movement and the 1966 Freedom Festival, where Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference mobilized communities to challenge segregation in the North. Grounded in perseverance, truth and nonviolent action, that movement helped catalyze reforms in housing, employment and public accountability.
The organization’s new logo features a star motif drawn from traditions in Black communities, Native tribes and women’s quilting circles — symbolizing safe passage, hope and the pursuit of truth. Its color palette pays tribute to the bold visual style of the Black Panther Party newspaper, known for its striking design and fearless journalism centered on community struggle and transformation.
Alongside the new visual identity, the Investigative Project has expanded its website to better serve journalists and the broader community. In addition to its latest investigations, the site now features a dedicated training hub with highlights from public training events, including key lessons, practical tips and tools for reporters.
These resources will continue to grow in the months ahead and will be featured in future newsletters, alongside standout investigative reporting from across Chicago and the nation. The organization aims to spotlight journalists who hold institutions accountable and advance equity through their work.
