Apprenticeship Training Program

The Investigative Project on Race and Equity offers early-career journalists a part-time apprenticeship training program that provides the foundational skills required to produce deeply reported investigative projects.

The apprenticeship program has three elements:

  • Hands-on investigative reporting

  • A training series

  • Mentorship from the Investigative Project’s vast network of veteran journalists in Chicago and across the country.

Apprentices are teamed with experienced editors and reporters to produce investigative projects that expose systemic bias through a lens on race and equity. The Investigative Project provides training on the fundamentals of investigative reporting, including obtaining public records, information gathering, working with data, reporting, fact-checking and interviewing sources.

Through hands-on projects, apprentices learn how to analyze data, find the stories behind the numbers and incorporate data into their reporting and writing. They also submit, track and negotiate Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and gain interviewing experience with a variety of sources, from public officials to community members.

Apprentices are also matched with mentors based on individual skills and interests.
